American Cultures:

I got to proctor the PSSA exams. Very interesting… I’ll have to write more on it later.

The students continued working on their brochures.  I went around and checked their brochures as to whether they were on task during the period.  Good day… lots of one-on-one time.

PSSA’s delayed the distribution of my new packet for chapter 16. I proctored the PSSA’s 2nd and 3rd period. I’ll have to write more on this later. 6th period John McCain current events article. The student now know about Barack Obama and John McCain. This was really just a good filler current event to keep 6th period and 2 & 3 all on the same page. It also served the purpose of getting some political issues into the hands of some students who never get them… my 6th period.

We began a Used Car Brochure project. Students were to reference information in an article on used cars to create a brochure of tips detailing the best advice on buying a used car. I made a model brochure and provided glue, scissors, colored pencils and magazines for the students to cut out pictures from. The students seem to like projects like this. I forgot to mention whether they could work in partners… they could. And they just assumed this and did anyway.

I got observed by my supervisor during this lesson. He thought I should include a rubric for the brochure. I made one after the fact and put it into the finished lesson plan below.

Tuesday, Feb 5: Section 3 of packet & Marine guest speaker

American Cultures:

Today, the student had section 3 of the “I am the Historian” packet for chapter 15 due. Once again, the calendar clearly shows this. More students showed up with it complete on this day than before so it seems like some of the students got the message. But the same old bad eggs that never took notes and failed the quizzes when Mr. Geisler was teaching seem to not care about the homework. I remind them that everyone has a right to fail.

Once again, going over the homework in class worked out well. I placed a short answer assignment at the end of the section so that the students had something to do while I came around and checked their work, stamping as I go. This lasted almost all period, so to deal with the free time I had the students do the crossword puzzle at the end of the packet. I allowed students to work in partners — this was a mistake — one that Mr. Geisler pointed out clearly. I changed the “partners” situation for the subsequent classes.

A Marine recruiter came in to speak to the students. He urged them to join the Marines. I am always a bit suspicious of these sorts of things. But they do give me a day to catch up on planning and hone down the things that I have planned for tomorrow.

Monday, Feb 4: Section 2 & Loans vs. Leases

American Cultures:

Today, we went over section 2 of the “I am the Historian” packet for chapter 15. This had been assigned as homework as per the calendar states. So today, I instituted a stamping policy where if a student completed their packet and has it with them on the day that it is due they get a stamp (a red circle with a ‘W’ and a check mark in it, thanks Tricia) The stamp gets them 10/10 on the assignment. If students do not complete their homework but complete it as we go over it in class, then they get a 5 out of 10. If they do not complete the homework at all they get a 0. I had a lot of students who did not complete the assignment today. I hope that this stern warning will motivate them to do their homework. Going over the packet went well. The students participated — some way more than others — and it managed to take up the entire class period.

I’ve noticed that I’ve been hamming it up a lot more in 6th period than I have been in the morning periods. 6th period seems to need that more. 3rd period looks at me like I’m a doofus when I get excited. 2nd is a mixed bag. No big problems today.

In Nav, we read an article on loans and leases. I led a quick discussion at the beginning of class that pointed out some major differences between the two types of car financing. Then they read an article that detailed exactly why one form might be better for them. For homework, they completed a worksheet out of their text.
